Discover how Ray and Alberto built Big Little Clouds, a geodesic dome glamping site in the Blue Ridge Mountains, turning it into a destination for nature and connection.
Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Big Little Clouds is more than just a glamping retreat; it’s an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and breathe deeply in one of the most scenic regions in the United States. For Ray and his partner Alberto, the vision was simple: create a peaceful escape just a few hours away from the bustle of everyday life, while offering guests a glimpse into the timeless traditions and natural beauty that define this iconic region.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to sweeping valleys, charming wineries, historic towns like Mayberry (famous as the setting of The Andy Griffith Show), and some of the most-visited landscapes in the world. It was here, surrounded by this rich mix of culture and nature, that Ray and Alberto imagined a retreat where people could relax on “love swings,” gather by the fire, or soak in hot tubs under the stars.
Curious about how this dream took shape, we sat down with Ray to talk about the beginnings of Big Little Clouds, the experiences that keep guests coming back, and the lessons learned along the way.
About the Beginning
How did the idea for your glamping business come about?
The original idea came from Ray’s business partner, Alberto, after staying in domes himself. He noticed how much attention these structures generated on social media and among travel enthusiasts, offering a getaway unlike any other. Ray brought in his own experience with investment properties, combined with a passion for camping and the mountains, to bring the vision to life.
“There was white space for these in the location we chose,” Ray says. “So we picked our spot and got to work!”
Why choose geodesic dome tents?
Domes evoke a sense of wonder and awe in people who see them. They’re relatively affordable and simple to build, yet command higher rates than traditional cabins. “We thought, why not?”
The name “Big Little Clouds”
The name captures the balance between size and imagination. The domes are big for tent-style structures, but smaller than houses. Yet the inspiration and sense of possibility they evoke is larger than life.
From land to launch
Finding the right land proved to be the toughest part. “You have to work with a county that has achievable permits and is easy to work with,” Ray explains. Once the land was secured, the build was like “a big 3D puzzle.” They assembled three domes in just a few days with friends, though installing the canopy required machinery and expertise.
Running the Business
A day behind the scenes
Much of the daily work involves coordinating with cleaners, addressing maintenance needs, and keeping supplies stocked; all while ensuring each dome is ready to welcome new guests.
Effective marketing tools
Social media partnerships have been key, collaborating with nearby cities to create and promote content. Airbnb also helps boost visibility when listings are optimized well.
Advice for aspiring dome owners
Winters can be challenging, heating and condensation need to be addressed. “We use gas heaters but sometimes wish we’d gone with wood-burning stoves,” Ray shares. “They handle both issues, but require the right insurance and supervision.”
Lessons and Reflections
Personal meaning
“This journey has been one of personal growth. Really putting the customer first and caring for their experience like you would your own is the only way to run a rental business in my opinion. Also, if you have a good team around you that makes working so much more enjoyable. In short, people matter very much in this business; how you treat your team and your customers will show in your ratings and your experience.”
Key lessons learned
Starting a business is hard work, but setting it up well from the start makes everything run more smoothly in the long term. Ray and Alberto decided to “go big” right away, launching their retreat with three domes. The idea was simple: benefit from economies of scale, spread out costs, and offer guests more choice right from the beginning.
“It was tough,” Ray admits, “but now it operates like a well-oiled machine. Going big ended up paying off because of the revenue it brings in.”
Final advice
“Surround yourself with a reliable team you can trust. It makes managing the business easier and far more rewarding.”
Big Little Clouds has quickly become more than a getaway, it’s a place where people celebrate milestones, reconnect with nature, and create memories that last a lifetime. From cozy nights by the fire to proposals under the stars, Ray and Alberto’s vision has grown into a retreat that captures the magic of the Blue Ridge Mountains while offering all the comfort of modern glamping.
Their story is a reminder that geodesic domes aren’t just unique structures, they’re backdrops for connection, reflection, and joy. And for guests at Big Little Clouds, each stay is another chapter in a story that keeps unfolding, high in the ridges and valleys of one of America’s most beautiful landscapes.
